Kids Shoes

Whats the big deal ?

Wearing ill-fitting shoes can have detrimental effects on the developing feet of children. Here are some potential impacts:

  • Foot discomfort and pain: Shoes that are too small, narrow, or tight can cause immediate discomfort and pain. This can result in blisters, calluses, corns, or pressure sores, making it difficult for children to walk or engage in physical activities comfortably.
  • Hindrance of natural foot development: Children's feet are still growing and developing. Wearing shoes that are too restrictive can interfere with the natural growth and formation of the feet, potentially leading to deformities or abnormalities in foot structure.
  • Foot deformities: Prolonged use of improperly fitting shoes may contribute to the development of foot deformities such as bunions, hammertoes, or flat feet. These conditions can cause long-term discomfort and affect mobility.
  • Altered gait and posture: Ill-fitting shoes can disrupt the normal walking or running pattern, leading to an altered gait and posture. This can strain different parts of the feet, legs, and even the back, potentially causing pain and postural issues.
  • Impact on balance and coordination: Shoes that do not provide proper support or stability can affect a child's balance and coordination. This may increase the risk of falls, injuries, and difficulty participating in sports or physical activities.
  • Long-term implications: Wearing wrong fitting shoes during childhood can have lasting effects on foot health and overall well-being. It may contribute to the development of chronic foot problems, foot pain, and posture-related issues in adulthood.

So if you are shopping for shoes at the last minute then these tips might be handy;

Find a suitable store: Have your child sized rather then just trying shoes on. Luckily we have a few stores in Adelaide that will do this for you.

Consider Shoe Width: Pay attention to both length and width when selecting shoes. Shoes that are too narrow or too wide can cause discomfort and affect foot development.

Allow Room for Growth: Choose shoes with some extra room for growth, typically about a half-inch to a full inch beyond the longest toe. This allows for natural foot movement and accommodates any growth spurts.

Check Toe Box Space:Ensure that the toe box (the front part of the shoe) is spacious enough to allow the toes to wiggle comfortably. A cramped toe box can lead to issues like ingrown toenails and discomfort.

Flexible Soles: Look for shoes with flexible soles that allow for natural foot movement. Stiff soles can affect the development of your child's walking and running gait.

Arch Support: While children generally have softer, more pliable arches than adults, some support is still important. Look for shoes with a mild arch support to provide stability.

Choose Breathable Materials: Opt for shoes made from breathable materials, such as leather or mesh, to help keep feet cool and reduce the risk of fungal infections.

Velcro or Lace-Up Closure: Choose shoes with either Velcro or lace-up closures. These allow for better adjustability and ensure a secure fit. Avoid shoes with tight elastic or slip-on styles that may be too constrictive.

Check for Seams and Stitching: Inspect the inside of the shoes for seams and stitching. Make sure there are no rough areas that could cause irritation or blisters.
